NTA Longlist: La Grande by Juan Jose Saer translated by Steve Dolph

La Grande by Juan Jose Saer, translated from the Spanish by Steve Dolph (Open Letter Books)

Saer-La_Grande_cvr_largeThe Argentine author, José Saer, died of lung cancer in 2005 as we was writing La Grande—the author’s last novel—remarkably rendered in English by Steve Dolph. As Dolph beautifully puts it in his afterword to this absorbing fiction: “La Grande is unfinished in the sense that incompleteness is its central motif as well as the manner in which it is narrated” (500). The poetry of Saer’s convoluted style, narrative strategies, philosophical musings, and sensory details are expertly channeled in this superb translation.
