CFP: Translating the Americas

Call for Papers

The Asociación de Estudiantes Graduados de Español of the Romance Studies Department of Boston University will hold the symposium “Translating the Americas” on April 22nd-23rd, 2011. The symposium will include panel discussions, workshops and bilingual readings.

There will be a preliminary event in conjunction with the symposium on April 21st featuring award-winning translator Edith Grossman.

The panels will consider questions such as:
What are the challenges associated with translating literature between English, Spanish, and/or Portuguese? How do political, social, and economic contexts influence which texts are selected for translation and how these are translated? Is the process different when texts cross the Atlantic? How have these choices changed over time?

We invite submissions on the theory or practice of translation in English, Spanish, or Portuguese. Abstracts should be limited to 200 words and sent to by March 25, 2011.

We thank the Boston University Latin American Studies program for its support.
